Asian businessman pleads guilty to selling liquor on Christmas Day but not guilty to bribing police

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Asian businessman Xuo Xeo Guo pleaded guilty to selling liquor on Christmas Day but not guilty to attempting to corrupt a public officer after it is alleged he pushed $300 into the hands of a corporal when being taken into custody.

Guo of Stephens Shop in southside Belize  City was convicted of selling liquor contrary to regulation 19 of statutory instrument #175 of 2020.

Allegations are that on Christmas Day 2020, Guo was caught by police selling liquor to a customer at his shop located on McKay Boulevard, Belize City.

Guo wasted no time and pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him at the commencement of his trial before Senior Magistrate, Baja Shoman in Court #6.

For his guilty plea, Guo was slapped with a $1,000 fine plus a $5 cost of court fine of which he has until July 20, 2023 to pay in default, two months imprisonment.

The trial against Guo for attempting to corrupt a police officer began after he was imposed a non-custodial  sentence.

Allegations are that the same day, he attempted  to corrupt a public officer Cpl. Manuel Chub who it is alleged, he gave $300 so that he could release him and not be charged for the offence of selling liquor. The case for  was adjourned for a later date in June, 2023.
