By Aaron Humes: The tenure of Evan “Mose” Hyde as president of the Christian Workers’ Union has ended following two terms as he was replaced by Leonora Flowers at the Union’s Annual General Meeting held on Saturday at its headquarters in Belize City.
Flowers in a vote defeated Marlon Middleton, lead negotiator for the stevedores which are the most powerful of the Union’s many collective bargaining units; she was joined by new trustee Jeffrey Trapp. She acknowledged the task in front of her but said that if she has her fellows’ support, it will not be insurmountable.
By amendment to the Union’s Constitution, approved by attendees, Hyde remains on the Executive Board as a “Special Advisor.” He was first elected in 2018 to succeed Dale Trujeque following his abrupt exit, and led the Union through its most fraught period, achieving multiple collective bargaining agreements but also actions against Port of Belize Limited and the Belize City Council.
