Belizean transmigrantes robbed at gunpoint in Mexico

Posted: Tuesday, May 23, 2023. 9:01 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: International and local media often cover stories of rival cartels and violence in Mexico.

Belizean transmigrantes that bring vehicles and other items from the United States to Belize to sell often experience assaults while traveling through Mexico.

On Saturday afternoon while traveling through Veracruz, Mexico a convoy of Belizean transmigrantes led by car dealer, Zeke Lino were robbed of 5 vehicles, items, money and passports.

During an interview with 7News, Lino explained that the armed culprits cut cross one of the vehicles and armed men with assault rifles exited and proceeded to rob them.

The culprits drove away with vehicles they were bringing to Belize, their passports, credit cards and money. One of the drivers was hit in his ribs with the gun and fired at.

“I think what they are after are these Ford pickups, because I heard stories that they took a couple of those vehicles from some people in different parts of Mexico. I mean, lucky to be alive. The blue F-150 was a 2020. It costs a lot of money. So they haven’t recovered that yet. I wish that you warned other people traveling, because a lot of people are coming,” Lino said.

In a Facebook post on Monday, Lino called on the Belize Embassy in Mexico and the U.S. Embassy in Mexico to assist since the victims included 3 Belizean-Americans, 4 Belizeans and 1 Guatemalan driver.

Lino said that 4 vehicles, 2 trailers, 1 golf cart and other items were stolen from them.

A police report was made and they managed to recover the trailers and some of the vehicles.
