Boston Celtics to draw inspiration from baseball’s Red Sox to avoid sweep

By Aaron Humes: For inspiration after a blowout Game 3 loss, facing elimination in Game 4, and trying to pull off the sort of comeback never achieved by any team in their league, the Boston Celtics are looking at home – to Major League Baseball’s Red Sox, who needed extra-innings heroics twice to overturn a similar deficit to the hated New York Yankees, the Associated Press reports via ESPN.

Here in Belize basketball fans are captivated by the Conference Finals, many saying after the Los Angeles Lakers’ Monday night loss to complete a sweep to the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference that they had expected a Lakers-Celtics Finals series matching the winningest teams in NBA history.

The 2004 Red Sox were beaten 19-8 at Yankee Stadium after dropping the first two games at home, but rode the likes of Dave Roberts, Bill Mueller, and David Ortiz to four straight wins and a World Series sweep of the St Louis Cardinals – their first of five titles this century. The Celtics would like the same after an “embarrassing” Game 3 defeat on Sunday, Boston forward Jaylen Brown said.

“We still believe we’re the better team,” Celtics guard Malcolm Brogdon said Monday. “We have not played like it in any of the three games. But, you know, there is always a first.”

No NBA team has rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win a seven-game series; it’s happened only once in Major League Baseball and several times in the National Hockey League. In eight chances, Boston has only extended a series once to Game 6 and once to Game 5, while their opponents have never been extended past Game 5 when up 3-0 and won five of their eight Game 4 appearances. And of course, the Celtics would like to “beat L.A.” and go at least one better than LeBron James’ side did this year.

The Heat are looking for history of their own – the first No. 8 seed to make the NBA Finals since the New York Knicks in 1999, and their seventh Finals appearance since 2006. As the No. 1 seed last year, they lost a heartbreaker at home in Game 7 and had to watch the Celtics celebrate before losing to eventual champions Golden State Warriors.

If Miami wins the East, Denver will have home-court advantage in the Finals. If Boston rallies, the Celtics would have the home-court edge.

Game time is at 6:30 Belize time, airing on TNT. We’ll have the results as they happen.
