Cuban health personnel in Belize commemorate Cuba’s 60 years of international medical cooperation

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Cuban health personnel in Belize, on Tuesday, commemorated Cuba’s 60 years of international medical cooperation in other countries since they first did so in Algeria as of May 23, 1963.

“During these six decades our collaborators were in the most remote places worldwide, having faced with courage and altruism contagious diseases such as Ebola, the serious aftermath of earthquakes, such as those in Pakistan and Turkey, and the Covid-19 pandemic,” the Cuban Embassy in Belize said in a communiqué to the Cuban medical mission in Belize as they celebrated paid tribute to the first cadre of Cuban doctors and nurses who ventured to Algeria.

“Part of these facts took place when a definite treatment for Covid-19 was not known yet for certain, but the love, professionalism, solidarity and humanism instilled in our people by the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, made Marti’s postulate of Homeland is Humanity a reality,” the statement said.

“On May 23, 1963, the first group of doctors officially arrived as collaborators in our sister nation, Algeria to give their support for the sake of medical assistance to this country,” the communiqué said.

According to the Cuban Embassy, since then 605,698 Cuban health personnel have given their services in 165 countries. Cubans in other countries also celebrated the anniversary.

According to Prensa Latina, health cooperation between Cuba and Belize started on December 8, 1990.

Incidentally, on Saturday, a Cuban health brigade attended a health fair in San Pedro.
