By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Sunday, Mexican officials raised the warning levels for the Popocatepetl volcano as smoke, ash and lava began to spew into the sky.
The alert level increased to “yellow phase 3”, the Associated French press reports.
The Popocatepetl volcano is considered one of the most dangerous in the world because some 25 million people live within a 100-kilometer (60-mile) radius.
The volcano is located on the borders of the central states of Morelos, Mexico, and Puebla.
The warning means “remain alert and prepare for a possible evacuation.”
It also signifies a higher risk of spewing magma and explosions.
The next step would trigger mandatory evacuations.
