Minister of Education, Culture, Science and Technology and Battle of the Drums secretariat discuss future collaboration

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On May 22, 2023, Minister of Education, Culture, Science and Technology Francis Fonseca, met with musical artists Lloyd and Joshua Arana. 

Minister Fonseca also met with the executive of Battle of the Drums represented by Darius Avila, Anthony Fuentes, Luke Palacio and Michael “Chips” Noralez.

The Battle of the Drums continues to contribute to the preservation of the Garifuna culture through the Garifuna Language retrieval program, Garifuna Drumming, Singing and Dance program and the Garifuna community support program.

For over 17 years, the Battle of the Drums organization has been engaged in the Garifuna cultural retrieval and preservation initiative.

Discussions included collaboration for the rollout of a Garifuna Language in Schools Program in 5 primary schools in Southern Belize.

 This initiative is being fostered through the joint collaboration of the Battle of the Drums Secretariat and the National Garifuna Council.

In addition, Minister Fonseca and the Battle of the Drums secretariat discussed support for and collaboration with the Ministry of Education for the Battle of the Drums Annual Primary Schools Garifuna Translation Contest.

“We look forward to a long-standing collaboration and mutually beneficial relationship with the Minister and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science, E-Governance and Technology,” the organization said.
