No bail for Western Paradise man pointing gun during domestic dispute

Posted: Tuesday, May 23, 2023. 8:49 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Mark Vernon of Western Paradise, Belize District, was denied bail on a charge of aggravated assault with a firearm in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court.

Vernon, 30, is accused of pointing and cranking a gun at his former partner’s brother after the latter told him he was violating a protection order taken out by his ex.

According to Iran Jones, he met Vernon and his sister outside her residence around 9:15 Saturday night; she was crying and that’s when he told Vernon that he should not be there in violation of the protection order against him.

As Jones turned to walk away, he heard what sounded like a gun being cranked behind him and turned to see Vernon allegedly pointing a pistol at him. Jones backed away with his hands up but there was no gunfire.

Vernon pleaded not guilty and claimed the charges would be dropped, but the complainant was not in court and so the arraignment went ahead. He was remanded until his next court date on July 17. He was separately charged with the alleged breach of protection order in the Belize Family Court.
