Airport fee for visitors in Belize doubles; Impacting travel costs

Posted: Wednesday, May 24, 2023. 4:28 am CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Belize is set to increase one of its airport fees by 100% for foreign visitors from August 1 this year, according to a newly passed statutory instrument.

The fee, known as the “Belize Airports Authority Airport Development and Passenger Service Fees”, was previously set at $18 but has now been raised to $36, significantly hiking the cost of air travel for tourists.

This adjustment will mean that foreign visitors departing from Belize will now pay an estimated total of 147 Belize dollars in fees.

The move comes as part of the government’s plan to fund a new $264-million master plan for the Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA).

The Cabinet announced this extensive upgrade for the PGIA back in March, stating that it would finance the new investments through approved adjustments to the non-Belizean airport development fee. The doubled fee represents a significant portion of this plan.

The sharp increase in airport fees is expected to impact the cost of traveling to Belize for foreign visitors. As the new changes take effect, tourists will need to factor in these higher fees into their travel budgets when planning trips to the country.
