International News: Brazil declares animal health emergency amid avian flu cases

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Monday, authorities in Brazil declared a state of animal health emergency for 180 days in response to the country’s first ever detection of the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus in wild birds, Reuters report.

Brazil is the world’s biggest chicken meat exporter with $9.7 billion in sales last year.

Usually, when a case of bird flu is detected, an entire flock would be killed on the farm.

Cases of bird flu can also trigger trade restrictions from importing countries.

Brazil’s Agriculture Ministry has created an emergency operations center to coordinate, plan and evaluate “national actions related to avian influenza.”
