By Rubén Morales Iglesias: After all the animosity between the two clubs during the regular season of the Premier League of Belize Opening Championship, the first leg of the Finals at Ambergris Stadium tonight Wednesday at 6:30 pm promises to be an energy-charged match. The Pirates are out for revenge, particularly after being drubbed 3-0 in Belmopan two Sunday’s ago in the match that was postponed twice before it was finally played away from home.

Verdes’ season has been a roller-coaster ride during which they’ve found themselves up and down in the standings. They finally settled their ship and finished the season atop the standings where they expected to be.

After tripping against Progresso 2-1 in the first leg of the semifinals, they defeated the Northern team 3-1 win in the second leg qualifying to the Finals on a 4-3 aggregate score.

While their starting goalkeeper Woodrow West missed most of the first game after being detained by police during the first half of the first semifinal in Orange Walk because they wanted to question him regarding the death of Imari Galvez, with whom he had a relationship, and later missed the second game, despite his already being released. This evening he will more than likely suit up. West has been in training on Monday and Tuesday and is today travelling with the club to San Pedro. If he doesn’t play, Argentine goalkeeper Leonardo Paz will take his place.

The hosts, for their part, have had a very good season, staying in the top bracket consistently and are exactly where they want to be. If there has been a distraction it was the stretched-out fight with the powers that be regarding the match against Verdes that should have been played on Saturday, April 8, but which wasn’t played until Sunday, Mary 14, in Belmopan instead of San Pedro, after two postponements.

Like Verdes, the Pirates stumbled against Port Layola losing the first semifinal 2-1 in Belize City but struck with brute force in the return in San Pedro wiping out Port 4-0 to advance to the Finals on a 5-2 aggregate win.

This is their moment, and the Pirates must deliver at home, otherwise the return match in San Ignacio will be so much more difficult.

Don’t forget. The match kicks off at 6:30 pm.
