By Aaron Humes: On Saturday last the St. John’s Primary School court in Belize City hosted the third week of games in the 2023 William Dawson Sprite-Digi Youth Basketball Tournament.
The first game saw Third World Ballers defeat Rockville Hardrocks 47-19; City Boyz defeated Mahogany Heights, 35-22; Boom Ballers defeated Sandhill Heats, 35-27; 501 Falcons defeated Mahogany Heights 33-25; Tora Bora defeated Ebony Lake 22-19; Kraal Road Boyz defeated Jaguars and Hard Rock Boys defeated Dan One, 35-34.
Coordinator Douglas Hyde commended the young men’s dedication to “shoot basketball hoops, not guns & coming together to form 24 teams within the Belize District, in a continuous effort of keeping the peace & unity through this intervention through sports strategy.”
Sponsors of the tournament include Minister Kareem Musa & Ministry of Home Affairs, Commissioner of Police Chester Clyde Williams, the Belize Police Department, Leadership Intervention Unit, Minister & Ministry of Youth, Sports & Transportation, Community Policing Unit Eastern Division, Sprite, Digi, St. George’s Caye Resort, Social Security Board, Rotary Club of Belize, Department of Youth Services, National Sports Council, Community Rehab Department, ILS Phoenix Foundation, Belize City Council, Dolphin Productions, Abner Murillo and David Zabaneh.
Next week Saturday, May 27, seven games are scheduled to play at the Hattieville Village Community Basketball Court, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
