Victim of ‘dollar van’ knockdown will face charges for cursing in presence of police

Posted: Wednesday, May 24, 2023. 10:03 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Raymond Dyer, 35, had to take an unexpected visit to the hospital to see after treatment of injuries sustained when he was sideswiped by a “dollar van” taxi driver on Orange Street in Belize City on Monday.

But he is also facing charges for using indecent words in the presence of a police officer, though apparently not for the assault on the driver which was captured on video.

Dyer, a chef by profession, told our court reporter that he was told when making a report about the accident on Tuesday to head to the Precinct One Police Station at King Street to be formally arrested and charged.

But when he went to court today, it appeared the court book for the charge had not been prepared and he was allowed to leave pending charges being levied – in his view literally adding insult to injury.

Dyer explained, “I was cursing and I was behaving what the police they call disorderly, but I got hit by a vehicle, you know. My kids, my life flashed before my face, my eyes, you know, I believe I was within my means to react how I react. I wasn’t in the middle of the street that, you know, this, this man literally swerved and accelerate, this van in my direction and hit me, okay? And I feel cheated. I feel very, very cheated. Yes, I know my right went wrong when I attacked the man, but I lose it.”

He added that what was captured on video only tells part of the tale – his visceral reaction after being knocked down. As he tells it, he took the hit for a female co-worker and was knocked to the ground, where he sat for a few seconds before realizing what happened and then charging at the driver, dropping an expletive as he did.

Now today, Dyer said, “I show up at the court and there’s no court book. There [isn’t any] charge at the court for me. You know, they’re wasting my time.”

Nonetheless, Dyer says he will plead guilty if and when he is arraigned for which he will be summoned to court, and will settle for damages from the accident with the driver out of court including compensation for his damaged cell phone. Another person was reportedly also injured during the accident.
