Agencies launch National Gender Equality Index Project

Posted: Thursday, May 25, 2023. 3:37 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Measurements are important in outlining where we stand according to Minister of Human Development Dolores Balderamos-Garcia.

In supporting the National Gender Policy, the Minister said the National Gender Equality Index, launched today, will measure access to safety, shelter and security including issues of gender-based violence; health, education, employment and participation in decision-making. These are all priorities for improvement under the Policy.

Much has already been done, but much more is left to be done, the Minister acknowledged.

Executive Director of the National Women’s Commission (NWC), Michelle Irving, said it was important to have the data to draw on to make decisions. Gender, by definition, is the complex of social construction of the sexes. The process will be inclusive and provide as wide a range of indicators as to where Belizean women stand.

The Project will be implemented by the LOVE Foundation, National Women’s Commission, Statistical Institute of Belize, Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) and others.

U.S. Ambassador Michelle Kwan spoke of her own young daughter and the world she would like to leave behind for her as women and girls face unique challenges in this day and age. The Index will identify the most important needs of women and girls and give them a voice, she said.
