By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize High School of Agriculture (BHSA) in San Lazaro, Orange Walk, said the school is going to introduce Tilapia Farming to its curriculum for the next academic year.
The BHSA is already constructing its tilapia ponds in preparation for the 2023-2024 school year which starts in late August.
“Students will be actively engaged in the process of maintaining and growing tilapia as an extra source of food security,” the BHSA said in a social media post.
“This will involve training and acquiring knowledge in the rearing of tilapia in a controlled environment. It will include pond management such as pH control, oxygenation, feeding and harvesting techniques.”
Tilapia is a popular fish that is high in protein, low in fat and rich in several nutrients. Tilapia farming has many benefits, such as providing food security and creating income opportunities.
The BHSA said the school is committed to promoting, expanding, and developing agriculture education in their community and Belize.
