Football Federation of El Salvador cancels Closing Championship after 12 fans die in a football stampede during quarterfinal match last Saturday

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Football Federation of El Salvador (FESFUT), on Wednesday, cancelled the Salvadoran First Division Closing Championship, after a football stampede that killed 12 fans and injured about 500 others during the quarterfinal match between Alianza and FAS on Saturday, May 20, at the Cuscatlán Stadium in San Salvador.

The El Salvador First Division League will have no Closing Championship Champions.

The Football Federation of El Salvador and the First Division League, organizer of the National Football Championship of El Salvador decided, in consideration of the families of those affected and honouring the memory of those who lost their lives, to call off the 2022/23 National Championship of El Salvador. The Football Federation said their priority is to ensure that the security measures for football events are reinforced. A release by both organizations goes on to say that with the support and international advice of FIFA and CONCACAF, they will implement better protocols that guarantee the tranquility of football fans and all those involved in these events.

Following that decision, the FESFUT and the First Division League said they determined that the three clubs to represent El Salvador in the international CONCACAF tournament, once Concacaf approves it, will be as follows: the champion of the opening tournament 2022 as the number one team, the subchampions of that same tournament as the second team, and in 3rd place, the team with the highest cumulative number of points for the regular season of both the 2022-23 opening and closing tournaments, 2022-2023. These teams will then be fast FAS, Jocoro, and Aguila.

FESFUT says the measure has been taken considering the gravity of the situation and the need to guarantee security conditions at football stadiums.
