Ex-special constable to serve a concurrent 12-year sentence for multiple sex assaults

By Aaron Humes: Former police special constable Carlos Chavez faced as much as 30 years behind bars for multiple sexual offenses, but his sentences were reduced to a concurrent sentence of 12 years by High Court Justice Antoinette Moore on Thursday.

Chavez was found guilty of one count of assault of a child under sixteen by penetration and two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse of the same victim, then 14. Chavez was sentenced to 12 years for the assault of a child under sixteen by penetration, 8 years for the first count of unlawful sexual intercourse, and 10 years for the second count of unlawful sexual intercourse with the minor. The incidents all took place at an undisclosed location in Northern Belize.

The concurrent sentence takes effect from March 14.

Chavez, defended by Oscar Selgado, denied the allegations under oath during the trial.
