By Aaron Humes: This week, the family of 14-year-old Laddie Gillett received justice when ex-cop Kareem Martinez was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment for manslaughter, pending an appeal.
Now, familiars of 14-year-old Kwame Williams, shot and killed about a month after Laddie, want similar attention in their fight for justice.
Someone familiar with the case claimed in commentary below a Breaking Belize News social media post about the Gillett case earlier this week, “There is nowhere near enough Coverage or Concerns for his senseless Murder. People don’t even know his name! I’m guessing because his family doesn’t own a resort or doesn’t have a foundation that people are donating money to or perhaps because a police officer wasn’t involved there is no care or “outrage”. What happened to a right to life for a minor? Is Kwame’s life not as important? Does Kwame not deserve justice?”
As we have reported, Williams, son of reggae artist and poet Ras Indio and grandson of kungo music creator Bredda David Obi, was shot and killed on Thursday, August 5, 2021, while on his way to his grandfather’s house.
Police at the time said they found nо lіnk bеtwееn Wіllіаmѕ аnd gаng асtіvіtу аnd rіvаlrу іn Dаngrіgа, nоr wіth аnу rесеnt іnсіdеntѕ іn tоwn, аnd ѕо unfоrtunаtеlу, hе арреаred tо hаvе bееn саught uр іn а саѕе оf mіѕtаkеn іdеntіtу.
Two days later, 24-year-old Dashay Deseque Williams, no relation, was charged with the murder. There have been no updates on the case since.
