Man’s sexual relationship with minor spanning two years sends him to prison for 10 years

By Aaron Humes: 31-year-old Alberto Cante faced as much as 59 years of imprisonment for seven counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, 13, in a relationship that spanned two years.

In sentencing him on Thursday, High Court Justice Antoinette Moore reduced the sentences to one concurrent ten-year sentence.

Cante was alleged to have had intercourse with the minor in the months of August and December 2015, March 2016; on April 5, 10, and 19, 2016; and between July 15 and 31, 2016, as testified to during the trial.

In his defense, Cante disputed having intercourse on the day of his birthday, April 5, but his brother’s corroborating testimony hurt his case when he said they had been drinking while he claimed to be working.

Cante was handed seven years each for counts one and two; eight years each for counts three and four; nine years for count five; ten years for counts six and seven. In a concurrent sentence, the longest time is selected so the sentence will run for ten years.
