2023 Atlantic hurricane season could have 12 named storms

Posted: Saturday, May 27, 2023. 3:12 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The 2023 Atlantic hurricane season commences on June 1 and goes through to November 30.

Forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are predicting a near-normal hurricane season this year.

Experts predict that there could be between 12 to 17 named storms. Of those 5 to 9 could strengthen to hurricanes including 1 to 4 major hurricanes (category 3, 4, or 5; with winds of 111 miles per hour or higher).

Several factors that could suppress storm development including El Niño are expected to develop this summer.

The emerging El Niño means that waters off the West Coast will be warmer and storm activity in the Pacific more active, while Atlantic hurricane activity may be weakened. However, water temperatures in the Atlantic are currently above average, which could counteract an El Niño.

The 2022 hurricane season saw 14 named storms including 8 hurricanes and 2 major hurricanes.

The first named storm of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season will be Arlene.
