Knifepoint rapist given nine years in jail

Posted: Saturday, May 27, 2023. 11:10 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Karl Lino, a Belize City resident originally from Dangriga Town, will spend nine years in prison after being found guilty at the High Court of rape.

Justice Antoinette Moore handed down the sentence this week after issuing a guilty verdict on April 20.

Lino was accused of going with a knife to a woman’s home in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, and breaking in with a hammer, before choking, beating, and raping her.

The victim testified that she was at home alone and sleeping when she awoke to find someone on top of her. She tried to delay him and possibly escape by asking him to wear a condom, but the rapist responded by aggressively grabbing her before the violent rape began.

Justice Moore set the term at nine years as Lino has no prior offenses. The minimum prison term for rape is eight years and the maximum is life in prison.
