Winston Smiling, businessman and PUP scion, dies

By Aaron Humes: Tributes are being paid to popular businessman and grand-nephew of the Right Honourable George Cadle Price, Winston Alexander Kent Smiling, who died on Saturday morning.

Smiling is perhaps best known as the founder of the Smiling Meats butchery franchise, based on New Road, which has produced choice cuts of meat for the populace for better than 60 years as a family business.

Winston Smiling served as Justice of the Peace and Commissioner of the Supreme Court and was very active in the People’s United Party (PUP). In 2006, in correspondence issued before his own passing, Price said of Smiling, “My grandnephew is and has been a loyal member and supporter of the People’s United Party for decades. He has risked his person and his family in carrying out, without complaint or question, the tasks assigned to him.”

Winston is survived by family members including popular sporting sons Matthew and Andrew, who carry on the family name in the sports of basketball and cycling where the former is a Cross Country Cycling Classic champion.

Daughter Nancy wrote this on her social media page: “Winston Alexander Kent Smiling is no more: My father was the epitome of this song and surely lived his life “My Way.” I love no other the way I loved you, Dad. I thank you for always loving every human being that you crossed paths with. You were a hero to many. May your soul rest eternal.”
