Verdes, San Pedro Pirates clash in PLB Championship Final today at 3:30 pm in Cayo

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Verdes are going for the kill today against the San Pedro Pirates in the gran Final of the 2022-2023 Premier League of Belize Closing Championship at 3:30 pm at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio. But, the San Pedro Pirates, who fell at home 1-0 on Wednesday, are travelling to Cayo with the same intent.

The Green Machine won the first leg of the Finals in San Pedro on an injury time goal by Christian Ramirez.

Since the Finals are based on points, Verdes only need a draw to win the championship.

The PLB said that in case of a draw in points, the aggregate score will determine the champions. Away goals don’t count as in the semifinals.

That means that Verdes win the championship if they win or draw.

The San Pedro Pirates would have to win by two goals or more to win the championship outright. A win by one goal, be it 1-0, 2-1, 3-2, etc, will force extra-time. If the draw persists, then penalty kicks will determine the championship.

Considering that Verdes edged Opening Season Champions Altitude in the Cumulative Table of Standings for the two regular seasons, if Verdes win the Closing Championship, they will also become Belize’s representative for the Concacaf League. If San Pedro win, then Altitude will represent Belize in the Concacaf League.
