By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Belize Audubon Society has awarded a tuition grant to Reef Protector Vielka Manzania. Manzania is a remarkable Reef Protector from Copper Bank Village, Corozal.
Vielka’s passion for marine conservation led her to become Open Water Dive Certified through the transformative Reef Protectors Program.
In acknowledgement of her outstanding performance in the Reef Protector Program, she was awarded a $1000 tuition grant from the Belize Audubon Society.
Since 2013, the Reef Protectors Program has been making waves in northern Belize, focusing on empowering the youth of Chunox, Copper Bank, and Sarteneja—the primary fishing communities in the region.
Vielka is a proud member of the 2020 to 2023 cohort, currently being celebrated by the Belize Audubon Society.
The goals of the Reef Protectors Program include providing an enabling environment for youths from fishing families to understand the value of marine conservation and environmental stewardship, enhancing knowledge and awareness of marine protected areas and their vital role in resource management and sustaining livelihoods and developing leadership skills through mentoring, empowering young individuals like Vielka to become advocates for our precious marine ecosystems.
“Thanks to the program, Vielka and her peers have had the incredible opportunity to explore the mesmerizing coastal environments of Belize. They have witnessed firsthand the beauty and importance of protecting our marine resources, fostering a deep understanding of the need for conservation,” the Belize Audubon Society noted.
BBN joins in extending congratulations to Vielka on her inspirational journey!
