International News: Former Salvadoran President sentenced to 14 years for negotiating with gangs

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, a judge in El Salvador sentenced former President Mauricio Funes to 14 years in prison for negotiating with gangs during his administration.

According to The Associated Press, the trial began in April and at the time, Funes was living in Nicaragua.

The trial was conducted in absentia.

The former leader denied negotiating with the gangs or giving their leaders any privileges.

In addition, former Security Minister Gen. David Munguía Payes was sentenced to 18 years in prison for his involvement in the negotiations.

Meanwhile, in 2019, Funes obtained citizenship from Nicaragua where he is believed to be living.
