By Breaking Belize News Staff: When 21-year-old Jossiah Bowden pleaded guilty to two counts of card theft in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, he told the court he had a good reason for doing so.

Bowden appeared unrepresented before Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford, charged for stealing bank debit cards from his employer, a 62-year-old retiree from the Los Lagos area on May 16 and May 18, and swiped it as many as eight times at different locations.

He pleaded not guilty to both counts and told the court that he committed the crime to feed his two children. The Senior Magistrate said that she wanted to conduct research into the matter to ensure an appropriate sentence and remanded Bowden to the Belize Central Prison until June 2, which has been set for his sentencing hearing.

On May 16, Bowden swiped the card three times at Ming’s Shop to a total of $627.50 and on May 18, 2023, the value of the purchases totaled $952.50, bringing the grand total in groceries to $1,597.50.
