Trouble brewing in Krooman’s Lagoon community, residents being told to vacate their homes

Posted: Monday, May 29, 2023. 3:30 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Tensions are high in the Krooman’s Lagoon community this afternoon as residents are reportedly being told to vacate their homes.

Community Chairman Ruben Cano contacted Breaking Belize News (BBN) today, explaining that men have been coming into their community since last week, saying that the land has been sold and is under new ownership. Residents have been told that they all need to leave as there is development planned for the area.

Cano said that they began tampering with infrastructure in the community, causing some residents to lose power and water supply to their homes, and that these men returned with a bulldozer earlier today.

Cano is appealing to authorities to intervene, stressing that many area residents have been there for over a decade.

BBN has contacted the Belize City Council regarding the issue and reports are that concerned citizens have called the police as the situation has the possibility of escalating into violence.

This is a developing story.
