Ministry of Health and Wellness: New University Hospital will enable next generation of Medical Professionals in Belize

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the Government of Belize announced the establishment of a new University Hospital for Belmopan.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) reiterated that its priority is to strengthen universal health coverage, which means that all Belizeans have access to the full range of quality health services they need.

The Ministry noted that the University Hospital will serve the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Belize, which is currently being developed and will represent the linkage for networking with the Caribbean and Central American subregion for the formation of human resources in health.

The Ministry says that the University Hospital is crucial to emergency preparedness and readiness specifically in terms of Belize being able to respond to diseases.

“The MOHW recognizes the need to improve its readiness to be able to respond to emerging and re-emerging diseases, which is currently a global threat. Being able to promptly respond to pandemics within the context of universal health coverage requires preparedness in the areas of human resources, laboratory strengthening, capacity building, surveillance, e.g. The collaboration with the University of Belize in the setting up of a medical school and having this new hospital as the University Hospital will contribute to this emergency preparedness,” the Ministry underscored.

“It is envisioned that this hospital will become an enabling environment for the next generation of medical professionals, will foster an atmosphere of learning and growth; will be a huge source of inspiration, not only for doctors and nurses, but also for medical laboratory technicians, pharmacists and other allied health personnel,” the Ministry added.

The Government says that this investment will lead to improved healthcare for all Belizeans.
