By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Representatives of the NUMASA Wellness Resource Center participated in the first International Congress of Traditional Medicine in Mexico on May 25 to 27, 2023.
NUMASA extended gratitude to the Ministry of Human Development, Families and Indigenous People’s Affairs and the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) for supporting the participation of 9 traditional healers in the First International Congress of Traditional Medicine.
Participants included 9 traditional practitioners of Maya, Creole, and Garifuna ethnicity.
The event was held at the Universidad Intercultural Maya de Quintana Roo Headquarters José María Morelos Quintana Roo, Mexico.
Discussions included Medicinal plants and botanical treatments; Curanderismo and traditional medicine and the effect of plants on the human organism.
Medical professionals from Mexico and Belize that include traditional medicine in their treatment and traditional medicine practitioners were among the facilitators.
“The presentations pointed to the need for the rescue and preservation of our ancestral knowledge.
The experience of sharing their products and knowledge energized the participants, traditional medicine, and complementary medicine practitioners,” NUMASA noted.
In addition, the forum provided an opportunity to explore the idea of organizing into an association to formalize standardization, training, quality control of products, certification of traditional healers, knowledge transfer, intellectual property and ethical research.
“The call for collaboration with medical doctors and academia both in Belize, Mexico and Guatemala was expressed and reinforced by all presenters. We are grateful to the organizers for their generosity and vision to have sponsored this event,” Lucia Ellis, the owner of NUMASA stated.
