By Aaron Humes: High Court Justice Ricardo O’Neil Sandcroft has fined Jasmine Hartin $75,000 on the charge of manslaughter by negligence, reflecting the loss of a life and its impact on those left behind.
Hartin’s sentence comes after she pleaded guilty to manslaughter by negligence for causing the death by gunfire of Police Senior Superintendent Henry Jemmott in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye on May 28, 2021.
The fine is due by May 31, 2024; in default 12 months imprisonment.
She is also to undertake 300 hours of community service with the Young Men’s Christian Association; produce a video telling her story of intoxication and handling a firearm; and has been disqualified from possession of any license for two years.
The judge said this represents an opportunity for Hartin to reform her ways despite her otherwise unblemished record. But he maintained that a custodial sentence was not appropriate in the circumstances.
Compensation for the family of the late Senior Superintendent Henry Jemmott was left to the civil courts to determine.
It is among the larger fines on record for such an offense in Belizean legal history.
More on this to come.
