People’s Constitution Commission continues strategic planning on engaging Belizeans in consultation process

Posted: Wednesday, May 31, 2023. 2:26 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The People’s Constitution Commission (PCC) issued a statement reiterating that the work conducted is of national importance and requires an engaged, transparent working relationship with the public and the media.

The PCC notes that Section 6(1) of the PCC Act constrains the role of the Commission to two basic, but all- encompassing functions:

(a) conduct a comprehensive review of the Belize Constitution; and

(b) prepare and submit to the Prime Minister a final report on the findings of the review.

“In the conduct of its work, it is the duty and responsibility of the PCC to be guided by the Act. This includes collecting and considering the views and opinions of the public. To this end, the PCC has invested the past 6 1⁄2 months into orientation and strategic planning on how best to engage the people of Belize and the media in a public education and consultation process. This process will be launched shortly,” the PCC noted.

“To date, despite what may have been suggested in certain quarters, the PCC has not had any debate, nor has it made any proposal on any specific wording, addition, or deletion regarding the Belize Constitution,” it further added.

In addition, the PCC stated that the exercise is “critical and sensitive”.

The public and media is encouraged to contact Carla Bradley, communications officer at the Secretariat for information or clarification on any PCC related matter.
