World No Tobacco Day: “Grow food, not tobacco”

Posted: Wednesday, May 31, 2023. 9:38 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today is being observed around the world as World No Tobacco Day.

The World Health Organization (WHO) noted that the day is set aside to inform the public about the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies, and what the WHO is doing to fight the tobacco epidemic.

“Tobacco growing harms our health, the health of farmers, and the planet’s health. The tobacco industry interferes with attempts to substitute tobacco growing, contributing to the global food crisis,” WHO noted.

The theme, “Grow Food, not Tobacco” is a campaign to encourage world leaders to end tobacco growing subsidies and use the savings to support farmers to switch to more sustainable crops that improve food security and nutrition.

In addition, Governments can raise awareness in tobacco farming communities about the benefits of moving away from tobacco and growing sustainable crops and support efforts to combat desertification and environmental degradation by decreasing tobacco farming.
