By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Charlie Slusher, head coach of the Premier League of Belize’s Progresso and former goalkeeper and coach of the Belize Men’s National Team (BMNT), was among 15 football coaches who last week completed the three-module CONCACAF B Coaching License course.

The final assessment was conducted by CONCACAF instructor Anton Corneal of Trinidad and Tobago on May 26, 27, and 28 at the FFB headquarters in Belmopan.

“Thanks to the Football Federation of Belize for the opportunity to continue my coaching Education, which can only help me to become a better coach,” said Slusher who has consistently pursued higher coaching experiences, including a Professional Football Coaches course given by the Professional Sao Paulo Coaches Syndicate in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2011 and the 15th Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) International Coaching Course given by the KNVB Academy in Zeist, Netherlands in 2013.

The CONCACAF B License course consisted of three modules plus a final assessment during which the coaches had to prepare three drills: attacking, defensive, and transition and Corneal decided the drill they had to execute.

Apart from Slusher, there were other well-known former players completing the course, like former BMNT goalkeeper and present BMNT coach Shane Orio and National Team Programme coaches Dennis ‘Den Den’ Serano, former Sagitun and BMNT player Gabriel Ramos Sr., Elmer Pott, Norman Koko, Wayne Casimiro, John George, Paul Casimiro, and Daniel Smith. Others who took and completed the course are Cornelio Herrera, Irvin Garcia, Glenford Hines, Winston Martinez, and Jorge Nunes – former Juventus player and coach of the BMNT and several PLB clubs Jorge Nunes.

“The Concacaf B License is designed to provide coaches with the requisite knowledge and skills to lead the elite youth player and team as well their amateur senior counterparts based on their developmental and competitive needs,” the FFB said in a statement posted on social media.

“The course is structured and delivered around a reality-based methodology focusing on the holistic development of players. Coaches will be mentored within their own football environment with the intention of improving same.”

Unfortunately, for the B License course coaches, as opposed to the C level course, there was no final closing. The coaches were told that they would get their certificates from the local associations later on.

To qualify for the B License course, coaches must have done the D and C License courses.

As it stands the Football Federation of Belize is starting another B License course on June 27-30. To sign up click here.
