By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Minister of Tourism, Anthony Mahler, said Belize is now actively seeking to attract Mexican tourists to Belize.
Mahler said Belize is being marketed as a major tourist destination in the region and the objective is to set up Belize as a hub connecting North America and Central America thereby attracting more visitors coming from the neighbouring countries. Mahler said Belize has now acquired the services of a new marketing agency to concentrate on the regional market.
“My focus is to create Belize as a hub,” Minister Mahler said.
“The partnership with Tropic (Air) is important as well. We have flights into some of the Central American cities.”
But Mexico is the prime target, he said.
“We’re working on Mexico. We have almost 120 million Mexicans next door, a lot of them dive. Forty million Mexicans travel each year internationally. That is just as much as Americans travel. So, it’s a key market,” Mahler said.
“We have hired a new marketing agency for the region and for Mexico.”
Mahler said that to facilitate Mexicans travelling to Belize, the Government has introduced a tourist card that will facilitate their travelling to Belize.
“We have just introduced the Mexican card whereby Mexicans can get a card and travel around the country for seven days at least.”
Regarding Tropic’s complaint about taxes charged when traveling to Mexico, Minister Mahler said he was meeting with the relevant authorities here, such as the Airport Authority and the private sector, to discuss departure fees.
