By Aaron Humes: Political and business stalwart Winston Smiling, 82, was given his final sendoff today at St. Mary Anglican Church on Angel Lane, Belize City, followed by interment at Lords Ridge Cemetery.
The ceremony was attended by Governor-General Dame Froyla Tzalam, Prime Minister John Briceno, and a host of other former and current parliamentarians and dignitaries.
Smiling, the grandnephew of the late George Cadle Price, was a diehard supporter of the People’s United Party and twice served as a Senator, but he was better known as a master butcher and barbecue specialist as well as conversationalist, as covered in remembrances from the likes of PUP chairman Henry Charles Usher, Dr Fernando Cuellar, and son Matthew Smiling, who used the occasion to call for the restoration of civility in political dialogue.
The ceremony was officiated by Anglican Bishop Philip Wright and the Belize Defence Force oversaw the handling of the casket at St Mary’s and Lords Ridge.
Smiling died after illness last Saturday and will be remembered by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
