By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today is being observed around the globe as World Environment Day under the theme, #BeatPlasticPollution.
The day is set aside to focus on solutions to plastic pollution under the #BeatPlasticPollution campaign, it emphasizes the impact of individual actions.
The Belize Audubon Society (BAS) noted that Half Moon Caye, a protected area in Belize, strives to preserve its natural beauty and it is mostly unaffected by garbage.
The BAS shared a picture of a tiny hermit crab on the beach that bears witness to the harsh reality.
Garbage from Central America washes ashore on many islands from the northern to the southern borders of Belize, affecting not only the hermit crabs but all species including turtles.
“Our rangers clean the beaches every day in addition to monitoring and research that occurs on the Lighthouse Reef Atoll. However, it serves as a stark reminder that plastic pollution knows no borders. By joining forces globally, we can make a difference,” BAS said.
“Let’s stand together, united in our commitment to protect the environment, and create a future where plastic pollution becomes a problem of the past,” BAS added.
BAS urged Belizeans to unite to beat plastic pollution and ensure a sustainable world for generations to come.
