By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize Marketing and Development Corporation donated three tilapia ponds to Belize High School of Agriculture (BHSA) in San Lazaro-Trinidad in the Orange Walk District on Saturday.
“The 3 ponds will be used by the school as it ventures into aquaculture in the coming semester, as part of its push to ensure students get an agriculture education that includes sustainable, climate smart agricultural practices,” the Ministry of Agriculture Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) said.
“The ponds cost approximately BZD 25,000.00.”
MAFSE said the Ministry’s Aquaculture Unit with headquarters in Central Farm will provide fingerlings for the pond and training on how to raise them.
BMDC Managing Director Valentin Carrillo, who is the chairman of the BHSA’s Board of Management, handed over the ponds to the school.
At the end of May, the Belize High School of Agriculture announced that it will introduce Tilapia Farming to its curriculum for the next academic year.
“Students will be actively engaged in the process of maintaining and growing tilapia as an extra source of food security,” the BHSA said in a social media post.
“This will involve training and acquiring knowledge in the rearing of tilapia in a controlled environment.”
The BHSA said it is committed to promoting, expanding, and developing Agriculture education in their community and Belize.
