By Aaron Humes: John Elwin Hyde Jr. was announced by police Monday night as having been arrested and charged with the weekend murder of Floyd Samuels, alias “Southy,” 45, on the island of Caye Caulker.
This afternoon as Hyde, 26, was being brought with other detainees to Belize City from the island via boat, he was caught on camera trying to publicly establish his alibi and claiming that Samuels was “set up” by a female acquaintance: “…check your sister-in-law breds. Yuh know me and you meh deh together. Me ah you meh deh together when yuh bredda get kill breds. Uno get uno lawyer and uno check bout uno sister-in-law breds. Uno sister-in-law set-up dah man breds.”
Appearing before Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford, he was read the charge of murder and given the standard warning that the offense is indictable, that no plea would be taken at this time, and that he is subject to a preliminary inquiry at which if there is evidence of a prima facie case against him, he would be committed to the High Court for trial.
Hyde was denied bail and remanded to the Central Prison until his next court date, July 25 in San Pedro Town.
Samuels was at home late Saturday night when two men came to the house on the pretense of buying tobacco leaves, known as “fonto,” but as Samuels went to retrieve them they opened fire on him and killed him on the spot.
