Bandits grab Port Layola’s Michael Palacio, PLB’s top scorer

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Bandits, under its previous Internacional FC name had their worst season ever, but they intend to change that quickly next season. On Tuesday the Belmopan club announced that they have acquired the services of Premier League of Belize top gun, Michael Palacio.

Palacio, who was Port Layola’s top scorer in the PLB’s Closing Championship, will now be based in Belmopan and shelling goals for the nine-time champions.

“Bandits Sports announces its first major signing in preparation for the upcoming PLB 2023/24 Opening Season,” the Bandits posted on social media.

“We are happy to announce the signing of Michael Mikey Palacio formerly of Port Layola FC and holder of the most goals trophy for the recently concluded PLB Closing Season. At the tender age of twenty-one Mikey is the future of Belizean football. Welcome to the Belmopan Bandits SC.”

With Palacio and company, Port Layola made the PLB playoffs but were edged out by the San Pedro Pirates in the semifinals winning one and losing the other to end an enviable season. The Belize City side will surely miss their top striker.

“Once yo come out a our camp you will be marketable, Port Layola FC did good, we nurtured many young players and turn them into stars,” said Port Layola’s senior defender Ian Gaynair.
