Minister of Agriculture Jose Abelardo Mai is on second day of exploratory visit to Honduras

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Minister of Agriculture Jose Abelardo Mai is heading a high-level delegation on the second day of an exploratory visit to Honduras.

Minister Mai on Wednesday visited banana and sweet potato fields at Comayagua, outside Tegucigalpa in Honduras.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) said the delegation has visited cardamom fields, sweet potato and banana plantations, and Zamorano University.

The team’s visit is being coordinated by the International Regional Organization for Agricultural Health (OIRSA).

Minister Mai and the delegation which includes CEO Servulo Baeza, Senior Technical Advisor Digno Polanco, and several MAFSE high ranking officers, are looking at crops that MAFSE has interest in either introducing or promoting more heavily here in Belize.

Apart from a cardamom cultivation facility in Cofradia and a meat processing facility and sweet potato fields in Comayagua, has also visited Zamorano University in San Pedro Sula. Many Belizeans have graduated from Zamorano. At present, a number of Belizeans are studying there.

Minister Mai has been pushing for more agricultural cooperation with the neighbouring countries and maintains good relationships with Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador. His pushing for a better relationship with Honduras augurs well for Belize’s agriculture.
