By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Sugar Industry Research & Development Institute in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise recently held a biological control methods demonstration for Orange Walk’s New Hope High School students.

SIRDI said the session was part of their ongoing commitment to promote sustainable agriculture practices.

The session focused on the use of Metarhizium, which is a naturally occurring fungus and has great potential in combating pests and diseases that often plague agricultural crops.

“Our aim was to empower the young minds of New Hope High School by providing them with hands-on experience and knowledge about this innovative approach to pest management,” SIRDI said.

SIRDI said the students were able to apply Metarhizium to a designated area within the school’s agricultural plot.

“Witnessing the implementation of this biological control method firsthand allowed them to grasp the practical aspects and understand its potential impact on crop protection,” SIRDI said.

The students displayed immense enthusiasm, curiosity, and a genuine interest in sustainable agriculture. Their engagement and willingness to adopt innovative practices underscored their commitment to creating a greener and more resilient agricultural future.

“We are confident that this collaboration will not only foster a deeper understanding of biological control methods but also encourage the students to become ambassadors for sustainable agriculture within their community.”

SIRDI said the students seemed genuinely interested and expressed willingness to adopt these innovative practices. SIRDI said it hopes the students later contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally conscious agricultural sector in Orange Walk.

“We’re thrilled to share the latest developments from our incredible Agriculture class,” New Hope High School said.

“This semester, we’ve been busy nurturing a wide variety of crops, and we’re delighted to announce that we’ve successfully planted corn, sweet pepper, cabbage, radish, tomatoes, musk melon, cucumber, and watermelon.”

SIRDI promised to keep supporting educational initiatives that cultivate a passion for sustainable agriculture.

“Together, we can build a future where innovative solutions like Metarhizium play a pivotal role in shaping a more resilient and environmentally friendly agricultural landscape,” SIRDI concluded.
