International News: Mexico’s Labour Department says employers must pay internet for work-from-home employees

Posted: Friday, June 9, 2023. 2:12 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Mexico’s Labour department issued new work-from-home rules including that employers must pay for employees’ internet.

According to the Associated Press, employers must also provide ergonomic chairs for employees working from home.

In addition, the new rules include a “right to disconnect” for employees who work at least 40% of their time from remote locations. This is due to the fact that employees who work from home say since they are reachable, they are also constantly asked to work.

The COVID-19 pandemic prompted thousands of employees to work-from-home and remote work seems to be an upward trend.

Mexico’s Labour department also noted that bosses must pay electricity.

Remote workers cannot be paid less than those who go to an office, and they must have set work hours.
