Vendor taken to court for assault and death threat on fellow vendor

By Aaron Humes: 51-year-old Alejandro Campos of Orange Walk Town has been having a tough time with a fellow vendor, one Elmer Umana, and their constant back-and-forth has now landed him in court.

Campos was charged with aggravated assault and threat of death before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola and after some discussion through a translator, pleaded not guilty.

He is accused, on Monday, June 5 at the Hattieville Football Field, of publicly threatening to kill Umana and assaulting him with a broomstick.

According to Campos, however, the alleged victim had supposedly been provoking him for several days, including allegedly sending food to his wife on the day of the incident.

He claimed that after a previous altercation, the two had promised to leave each other alone, but the food incident was the last straw.

There was no objection to bail and so he was offered bail in the sum of $1,000 plus one surety of the same amount.

The men are not to contact each other and Campos is to avoid committing further offenses while on bail.
