By Aaron Humes: Following the shooting death of Belize Defence Force soldier Jose Manzanero, which occurred on Saturday, June 10, police formally arrested and charged Elvis Gerald Humes, 45-year-old Belizean Electrician of Bullet Tree Falls Village, Cayo District, for the crimes of manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, keeping a firearm without a gun license, and keeping ammunition without a gun license.
Police established in their investigations that Humes and two others were hunting in the El Pilar area when they deviated from each other. According to Humes, he saw what he thought were the eyes of a deer and fired in that direction, but it turned out to be Manzanero.
Police found nothing indicating a deliberate shooting. They further established that the 16-gauge shotgun Humes was carrying was licensed to a family member, not to him directly.
