By Breaking Belize News Staff: Oceana in Belize, as part of their World Oceans Day celebrations, announced the winners of its highly anticipated Instagram Photo Competition. Belizean photographer, Leigh Anne Kib, claimed the top spot for her captivating photo in the Coastal Communities Category.

Kib, known on Instagram as @believe_in_leigh, submitted a photo that beautifully showcased the vibrant and united spirit of the Belizean coastal communities. The picture, captioned, “Belizean coastal communities are a lively mosaic of faces, color, and an overall spirit of togetherness…”, effectively conveyed the charm and challenges of sustainable living in these areas. As the overall winner, Kib receives an impressive GoPro Hero 11 Black Content Creator Kit.

First runner-up was awarded to Henry Brown Jr. (@henry.brownjr), for his stunning image of a school of male Striped Parrotfish foraging on the sea floor off the coast of Placencia. His entry, submitted in the Marine Life Category, highlighted the diverse and vital marine life in Belize’s waters.

Louise Roe-Courtenay (@vacationbelize) secured the second runner-up position with her image in the Above and Underwater Seascapes Category. Roe-Courtenay’s photo captured a local fisherman near the Silk Cayes Marine Reserve, accompanied by the caption, “In the waves of change, we find our direction.”

The competition, which aimed at drawing attention to the magnificence and diversity of the ocean environment above and underneath its waves, saw a surge of participants across Belize. Oceana expressed their gratitude to all the participants, stating that the high quality of entries made the judging process a challenge.

Through this competition, Oceana in Belize continues its commitment to raising awareness about the importance of the oceans and coastal communities. The celebration of World Oceans Day underlines the need to recognize, appreciate, and protect these vital ecosystems that provide both livelihoods and recreational opportunities for Belizeans.

With hashtags like #WorldOceansDayBZ2023 and #OceanaInBelize, the organization and participants took to social media to spread the message of ocean conservation and sustainable living in coastal communities.

Congratulations to all the winners for their exceptional work in shedding light on the ocean’s beauty, promise, and potential through their photography skills.
