By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On June 14, 2023, the Lubaantun Maya Temple in Toledo came alive with culture and colour as the Santa Cruz Community Dancers donned new Deer Dance attire.
The new attire was purchased through the partnership of the Ministry of Human Development, Families and Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs and the National Institute of Culture and History under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology.
The investment, which includes the cost of the attire and a marimba, is valued at over BZ$50,000.
The Ministries noted that this is a commitment to support the preservation of the Maya culture, specifically, the traditional Deer Dance.
Both Deer Dance attire and the marimba were produced in Cobán, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala.
