By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Benny’s Belize Hurricanes have taken a 1-0 lead in the Belize Elite Basketball League Final Series with an 86-64 crushing victory that had the San Pedro Tiger Sharks fighting against themselves at the Belize City Civic Center on Thursday night.

The Hurricanes had a balanced attack with Tyrie Orosco and Jamell Harris powering the way with 22 points each. Additionally, Orosco contributed six rebounds and two assists while Harris pulled two rebounds and made four blocks. Victor Evans chipped in nine points, collected three rebounds, and dished three assists. Alex Carcamo, who was honoured on the night by the Hurricanes for his long and successful career, tallied nine points, 13 rebounds, three assists, and three blocks as well.

A great night for the Hurricanes, winning the first game quite convincingly making mincemeat out of the crumbling Tiger Sharks.

The overwhelmed San Pedro Tiger Sharks had no answer for the Hurricanes’ offense, struggling all night. Jamal Clifton and Jihad Wright were the only players to score in double digits, with 18 points each. Clifton also had nine rebounds and two steals, while Wright had six rebounds, three assists, and four steals. Kyle Steward contributed 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Hurricanes scored 29 of 71 attempts for a shooting percentage of 40.87 while from the three-point line, they converted seven out of 17 for 41.2 percent. They pulled 55 rebounds, 19 off the offensive glass and 36 on the other side, while committing 20  turnovers.

The Tiger Sharks only converted 24 out of 74 attempts for a dismal field goal percentage of 32.4%. But what’s worse is that they only hit two of 19 attempts from beyond the arc for an extremely low 10.5 percent. They pulled 44 rebounds in the game, 17 offensive and 27 defensive, making 18 turnovers in the process. With two turnovers less than the Hurricanes, that was the only department in which they bested their opponents.

The Tiger Sharks will have to regroup quickly for Game 2 at San Pedro on the weekend, otherwise they might find their season over in three games.
