People’s Constitution Commission engages tertiary students in Corozal District

Posted: Friday, June 16, 2023. 7:42 am CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Representatives of the People’s Constitution Commission (PCC), the body tasked with making recommendations to reform Belize’s Constitution, were in Corozal this week speaking with tertiary-level students.

PCC Chairman Anthony Chanona, along with Commissioners Ruth Shoman, Perlita Aldana, Head of the PCC Secretariat Cesar Ross, and Legal/Research Assistant Clara Chi, visited students from Corozal Junior College and Corozal Community College on June 14.

The PCC said that the visit was geared towards sharing information about the launch of the education campaign on constitutional reform. The sessions also gave educators an opportunity to sensitize their students on the issues surrounding the reform process and allowed community members to ask questions.

“The PCC team was well-received, and the visit generated excitement and positivity around this historic endeavor among the educators of both these institutions. The team is looking forward to engaging with the other educational institutions in the Corozal District,” the Commission said.

The PCC is a body of 23 special interest organizations including academia, religious groups, and cultural groups as well as political parties. The PC was inaugurated on November 14, 2022, and held its first meeting on November 24, 2022.

The Commission was given 18 months to hold consultations and discuss recommendations for constitutional reform after which time they will submit their recommendations to the Government of Belize for consideration.
