By Celeste Chang: According to the Government of Belize, the ‘Sembrando Vida Belize project’ assures that they will increase agricultural productivity and ameliorate the quality of life for small farmer-beneficiaries. The project will also provide jobs for farmers, allowing them to have an income.
Participating farmers will be given $2,000; an agriculture package of seeds, fertilizers, tools, and fruit and forest trees; and capacity-building training for the duration of the eight-month project. Sembrando Vida is administered through The Mexican International Cooperation Agency for Development (AMEXCID), with support from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise.
Farmer Celso Martinez stated that the components he received are beneficial to agriculture improvements and for the improvement of human health. He went on to say that he believes that they are working on giving nutrition to people. Another farmer, Mirna Reyes, shared her thoughts on the project saying, “it’s a lot of help not only to me but the other famers, we are seeing an increase of all the products such and fertilizers, the pesticides and the standard of living is high. So, this help comes in very handy for us to continue growing more and planting more.”
Minister of Agriculture Jose Abelardo Mai supported the farmers and reassured them that they will have his continual support. He also promised to review and improve Belize’s trade policies and find affordable financing for farmers, so that they will grow and produce more of what is consumed in Belize, promote diversification and a climate-smart agriculture system.
