Inspector of Special Patrol Unit charged with wounding detainee in police station

Posted: Monday, June 19, 2023. 10:03 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Inspector of Police Christopher Martinez, the head of the Special Patrol Unit for Eastern Division, is tonight out on bail on a charge of wounding a man police had detained for questioning in relation to a complaint he made against him.

Meanwhile, that detainee, 29-year-old Aaron Flowers, was also charged with assault of the Inspector.

As detailed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero, officer commanding Eastern Division, Flowers had been detained in relation to a report that Inspector Martinez’s residence had been shot at about a month and a half ago. While in the cell block, Inspector Martinez is alleged to have approached Flowers and began to attack him, causing an injury to his head.

ACP Romero confirmed that the two have previously confronted each other and had “bad blood” between them. Officers on duty responded on hearing noises from the cell and pulled the Inspector away from Flowers. It is not clear what may have led to the attack.

In court this morning, Flowers was charged with common assault of Inspector Martinez on Thursday, June 15. He pleaded not guilty and met bail of $300. His family members claim that the officer pulled a gun on him in the presence of his family before the later beating. They are seeking legal advice.

This afternoon, the Inspector, 45, was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola for allegedly wounding Flowers. He pleaded not guilty and was offered and met bail of $1,500.

Inspector Martinez returns to court on August 9. A formal report is being compiled for an internal investigation which will determine whether the Inspector is interdicted and faces disciplinary charges.
